Every few weeks, someone asks me: "Will AI replace what I do?"

If you're a professional who gets paid for expertise and judgment, here's my honest answer:

No. But it will change what you spend your time on.

What AI Actually Replaces

AI is excellent at:

  • **Generating first drafts.** Memos, emails, summaries—the blank-page-to-something phase.
  • **Processing information.** Reading long documents, extracting key points, comparing versions.
  • **Pattern matching.** Finding similarities, flagging anomalies, categorizing data.
  • **Routine communication.** Scheduling, reminders, standard follow-ups.
  • If these tasks consume significant portions of your day, AI will change your workflow dramatically.

    What AI Cannot Replace

    AI is genuinely bad at:

  • **Understanding context you haven't provided.** AI doesn't know your client's personality, your firm's culture, or the unspoken dynamics of a situation.
  • **Exercising judgment about trade-offs.** Should you push back on this clause? Is this client worth the hassle? AI can list pros and cons—it can't decide.
  • **Building relationships.** Trust, rapport, and credibility come from human interaction. AI can draft the email; it can't be present in the room.
  • **Knowing when the rules don't apply.** Professionals know when standard approaches won't work. AI follows patterns; you recognize exceptions.
  • **Taking responsibility.** When something goes wrong, clients don't want to hear "the AI made a mistake." They need a person who stands behind the work.
  • The Real Shift

    Here's what's actually happening:

    The administrative and processing tasks that used to fill your day are becoming cheaper and faster. The judgment and relationship work that clients pay premium rates for isn't.

    This means:

    If you're mostly doing administrative work: Yes, AI represents a threat. Not because it's smarter than you, but because it's cheaper.

    If you're providing genuine expertise and judgment: AI is a tool that frees you to do more of what clients actually value.

    How to Position Yourself

    The professionals who thrive with AI will be those who:

    1. Use AI for leverage, not replacement. Let AI handle the parts that don't require your expertise, so you can focus on the parts that do.

    2. Develop judgment that can't be automated. Deep expertise in your domain. Pattern recognition from years of experience. The ability to read people and situations.

    3. Build relationships that create loyalty. Clients don't stay with professionals because of efficient document processing. They stay because of trust.

    4. Stay current on AI capabilities. Know what these tools can and can't do. Use them where they help. Recognize where they don't.

    The Opportunity

    Here's the optimistic view:

    Most professionals spend significant time on work that doesn't require their expertise. AI can handle much of that work. What remains is the high-value, high-judgment, high-relationship work that clients actually want from you.

    If you can make that transition—from doing everything yourself to focusing on what only you can do—AI becomes an amplifier, not a threat.
